Free Zines
This project was an exploration into my own personal design style. I wanted to explore making art on a deeper, more personal level, which led me to creating a series of zines in the style of diary entries. I wanted to explore a wide variety of themes, design styles, and writing styles in this body of work. The prompt I gave myself was simply to create zines based on whatever I was thinking about. I hoped to create works that reflected on my own personal feelings, experiences, and opinions, while also being relatable to a wider audience. The design aesthetics vary greatly throughout these pieces because my aim was to find what style of work I enjoy working in most.
The medium of zines provided a simple way to explore these ideas. Zines initially gained popularity within the punk scene in the 70s and 80s and acted as an easy way to spread information about upcoming shows, political issues, and more. The format allowed me multiple pages to explore aesthetics and ways to convey my ideas, while also not being an overwhelmingly large project. I leaned into the easily producible nature of zines by using inexpensive materials such as copy paper and embroidery floss that I already had available to me.
